Would making prisoners run in giant hamster wheels be considered cruel and unusual punishment?

Think about it. A rapidly growing, planet friendly form of energy could be harnessed. Finally a sustainable power source at our fingertips, the only roadblock being that darn eighth amendment.

Answer:
I think it's a great idea.

But I think a row of stationary bikes with generators attached would be more effective ...

(Heck, we'll just start by taking away everything electrical but the lights - if they want to watch TV, they'll need to power it!)

That would be a great idea! And maybe pay them with a cigarette or something.
I don't know about cruel, but it'd obviously be unusual.
It would be cruel only if you gave them food in pellet form.
Bar the amendment, bring the cages! hahhahahahahhahahahhahaahahhah...
i have always thought that providing inmates with giant hamster wheels was a much better idea then saying, "here you go, hardened criminal, have some weights to build up those muscles so you can go kill another guy with your bare hands"
It depends how much u make them run on it to decide whether it is cruel or not. But, it is pretty unusual. I like ur idea on how it could create energy. I'm sure it would be cheaper and more productive to get stationary bikes.
Depends on how you "make" them do it.
ex. If you put an alligator in the cage it would.
If you put a sl*t... again it would(for the sl*t).
If you pay them, it wouldn't be a punishment - it would be a job.
The only way that would ever be effective is if you got every inmate in the world to do this. On a stationary bike you can only produce like 100 watts an hour. In comparison, a light bulb needs 60-80 watts of constant electricity. You would need like 5 ppl to power one good size TV. A hampster wheel is even less efficient.
