Renting an apartment?

This is my 1st time renting an apartment and I'm wondering what kind of processes I need to go through? I have two other roomates and they told me that we have to sign the contract TOGETHER in order to rent a house/apt, is that true? Because I will be on a trip the date they sign the contract and I'm afraid that I have to cancel my trip (and I don't want to)...Can they sign the contract w/o me (or maybe I can sign it later)? Thanks!!

Answers:
Contact the landlord (or landlady) to see if you can make arrangements to sign the lease early or late. Or perhaps you can all go in and sign it early together, before your trip. It's important that you all sign, though, so that if anything goes wrong (and with roommates, it *really* can) you are all equally liable.
