Is there such a thing in the United States as public crimes and private crimes?
In case, this sounds absurd, there is in my country.
public crimes: murder, rape, theft, etc...
private crimes, crimes against one's personality, etc...

Civil charges are charges in which you seek money or monetary damages. The evidence used to convict you must be overwhelming or reasonable assumption of guilt. Civil charges and criminal charges can apply to the same offense. For instance, if you are hit by a drunk driver and have medical injury, the state will prosecute under criminal charges drunk driving charges. You can sue for damages under civil law for your injuries.
Not quite. Here we have Criminal Offenses and Civil Offenses. Civil Offenses resemble private crimes.
In the U.S. there are criminal laws and civil laws. One has the ability to throw you in jail and the other can take you for everything you have.
