What do you think about the death penalty ?

After answer, argue why are you being for or against, PLZ!!

Answers:
I was pro-capital punishment for a long time, but I have changed my stance over the years, for several reasons:

1. By far the most compelling is this: Sometimes the legal system gets it wrong. Look at all the people who have been released after years of imprisonment because they were exonerated by DNA evidence. Unfortunately, DNA evidence is not available in most cases. No matter how rare it is, the government should not risk executing one single innocent person.

Really, that should be reason enough for most people. If you need more, read on:

2. Because of the extra expense of prosecuting a DP case and the appeals process (which is necessary - see reason #1), it costs taxpayers MUCH more to execute prisoners than to imprison them for life.

3. The deterrent effect is questionable at best. Violent crime rates are actually higher in death penalty states. This may seem counterintuitive, and there are many theories about why this is (Ted Bundy saw it as a challenge, so he chose Florida – the most active execution state at the time – to carry out his final murder spree). Personally, I think it has to do with the hypocrisy of taking a stand against murder…by killing people. The government becomes the bad parent who says, ‘do as I say, not as I do.’

4. There’s also an argument to be made that death is too good for the worst of our criminals. Let them wake up and go to bed every day of their lives in a prison cell, and think about the freedom they DON’T have, until they rot of old age. When Ted Bundy was finally arrested in 1978, he told the police officer, “I wish you had killed me.”

5. The U.S. government is supposed to be secular, but for those who invoke Christian law in this debate, you can find arguments both for AND against the death penalty in the Bible. For example, Matthew 5:38-39 insists that violence shall not beget violence. James 4:12 says that God is the only one who can take a life in the name of justice. Leviticus 19:18 warns against vengeance (which, really, is what the death penalty amounts to). In John 8:7, Jesus himself says, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
I think that we should use the guys on the waiting list for gladiator games. They have to sign up though. It could be on pay-per-view.
Against..because we can not play God.

But when something horrible is done to a child..I am FOR
its stupid just give them life in prison except if there like osama, then they should be killed
for it, but only in cases with "smoking gun" evidence when there is without a doubt no question the person is guilty.
I'm for it.

Now I don't mean whoever is convicted of a crime should be put to death. I think that once someone has been bad enough in society and just is not safe to have around, let's kill 'em! They're also just taking up valuable space in our prisons that could be used to teach small time criminals a lesson to get them to be good again.
im for it i mean its there fault there going to die . it was all about them and there descision to brake the law and now they die . the world is getting to soft these days
I am against it. I don't believe we have the right to take another human life. Most of the time that is what the people on death row are there for. Doesn't make much sense to punish them for something that we are doing ourselves.
Did you no that about 60-70 percent of the people that go to prison are actually innocent? So... i think the death penalty is wrong.i think these cases should be open to more investigating. do you relize how many innocent people get the death penalty? Crazy.
If they were a terrorist, and they were put to death, their home would think of them as a hero. But leave them in jail to rott in with a guilty conscious is a far better punishment
I believe the death penalty should be used in cases where there is absolutely no doubt the person being sentenced is guilty of said crime.

If there is the slightest shadow of doubt in guilt, then the person being sentenced should be sentenced to a term in prison until further 'positive proof' is obtained.
Studies show that each execution prevents up to sixteen murders. Further, it's the only way justice and closure can be brought to bear on a murder case.

So.. the simple act of bringing justice saves many innocent lives. That is a good thing.

Now, people are going to claim that there are all these innocent people in jail or who have been executed. That is simply not the case.
Kill them faster. If they were stupid enough to earn a death penalty, they deserve to die.
I'm against it, in all instances.

If it's a crime to kill someone, how can you possibly sentence someone to death? You just had a trial and a guilty verdict that it was against our laws to murder.

On the flip side, I think prisons have gone soft. I would sentence the pedophiles, murderers, rapists, etc... to prison. Prison means no TV, no cable, no video games, no music, no libraries, no weight rooms, no 3 square meals a day, no comfy cot, etc...

You are up at 5:30 am with water and cereal for breakfast. Then off to hard labor work from 6:30 am until Noon. Stop (outside) for water and a sandwich. Then more hard labor from 12:30 until 6:00 pm. Back to prison for dinner of soup, bread & water. Into your solitary cell from 7:00 pm until the next morning.

You get 1 hour off on Sunday morning for a shower, exercise, or prayer.
It should be abolished !
I'm for it under the right circumstances and evidence. I also believe that child molesters should be put to death by being put in with the general population at a jail. For most cases, the child molesters are never reformed and continue to commit the same crimes after they are released.
i don't think humans have the right to take the life of another human unless it is necessary to do so to protect yourself or others, instead i think they should have life in prison
I believe that there are people who deserve to die for the horrible crimes they committed.

However, I am against the death penalty as it is used today in this country. I do not believe that the state should be the entity that takes away their life, because as you know, as soon as the state gets involved in anything, it gets screwed up.

Death is a final decision that cannot be changed when the state realizes decades later that the person was actually innocent. Furthermore, the death penalty is an institution that is not applied fairly (Think about all of the rich millionaires you know on death row. Can't think of any? Me either.), and every day you hear about more and more wrongful convictions and DNA-based exonerations, etc.

The state simply cannot be relied upon to take life fairly.
I am for it, I say an eye for an eye.
Look, with Prison overcrowding and heinous crimes happening alltogether too much, the death penalty should be carried out. If someone murdered one of my loved ones, I would want to see him executed.
it is kind a useless. People who get the death penalty don't get better. they only waste taxpayers money. just my point of view.
I am against it because if someone did something that bad to get the death penetly i think that they should suffer in prison untill the day they die> Because when you think about what would you rather be in prison in that some sedcluded room all your life or dead.
it is wrong because they might end up killing the wrong guy. This has happen a lot where they lock one guy up who did not commit that crime then ten years later the find out who really did it. Also it is more painful for the person to sit in jail because they have to think about what they did and it haunts them.
the death penalty is the best way to cut crime. im all for the death penalty because back in the day when there was a death penalty, the crime wasnt an everyday thing. if people get severly punished for their crimes, potential criminals will think twice, and why pay for useless scum to live a better lifestyle in prison than most americans live?
I am for it. If someone kills another person in cold blood, they deserve to be killed. That is not to say everyone who kills should be put to death, but I think there is a difference.
why should we have to pay for room and board of a sicko that has no regards for human life? i say fry'em!!
Wow, havent had this question since college. I do believe in the death penelty but only for extreeme cases, such as jeffrey dalmer/charles manson. These people will never contribute anything to society and have commited such horrible crimes that spending hundreds of thounds of dollars to keep them alive for years in a prison doesnt seem right. They took away the lives of their victims and if ever released would most likely repeat the crime if released.
well i am for it! if someone has murdered another person or brutaly hurt another person i think they should be punished and especially when it has to deal with chidren. i think murderers and rapists should be killed.
There is two sides of that question. One is that usually it's the wrong people taking the descition of another persons death(like Bush).. the other is that it helps regulating the overpopulation of the human species.
i am all for it because once theyre gone they cant be released to kill again as they are doing time and time again now days how many time have killers been released no matter what their sentence and kill alot more people
I think that the death penalty is a good thing, and that we should use it more often. I'm not saying that everyone that goes to jail should be killed, but if there's a person that commits murder for no reason, or if someone kills more than once, I believe that that person should suffer the same fate as their victims. Basically, if someone kills another person, they should also die.
Mostly against it; I think it is much overused.

However, I would still reserve it for the most heinous of criminals (i.e., serial killers, mass murderers, etc...)
