What is the punishment for draft dodging ?

Just curious since many prominent people in politics have escaped the draft in one form or another.

Answers:
Most of the people you're referring to did not "dodge" the draft, but rather got out of it legally--claimed an exemption based on the fact they were in school, or used another loophole to get out.
People who can get punished for draft dodging are those that have been sent their notice of service but decide not to go anyway--either escape to another country or try to fly under the radar (or never register in the first place when they're required to). Technically you can be sent to jail, although the government hasn't typically spent a lot of time or energy hunting down draft dodgers.

Prison some cases might lead to death
I don't know what it is, but I know what is SHOULD be...a long, long prison sentence.
Commies taking over.
Hunter in the Hizzie is right.

Commies will take over.
Under the most extreme cases, prison; for most cases within recent memory, nothing. In particular, all draft dodgers from Vietnam were pardoned, and there hasn't been an active draft since.

Desertion, under the UCMJ, is potentially punishable by death; but these days usually results in dishonorable discharge with loss of benefits.
A lifetime of cowardice and guilt. Not because of the glorious cause or because any war is right. But because some other poor bastard with a higher draft ticket has to go in the dodgers place. Awful, intolerable bastards.
Coward!
Nothing really.
Prison, Ali did 5 years and he was the Heavy Weight Champion at the time.
Read Henry V. The punishment is a lifetime knowing that you chickened out. Being part of a "band of brothers" doesn't make someone a warmonger, either.
It should be death. This should be an act of treason, not to be willing to fiht for your country. If you want fight and die for it leave it.
Draft dodging is perfectly legal. It's basically exploiting loopholes in the law. Dodging is different from refusal.
If you are poor and vocally oppose an illegal war -- jail.

If your daddy is rich and powerful and you claim to support the war, and your daddy can get you cushy job in the Alabama Air guard or Indiana national guard and then you desert -- no penality. You can even become pres or vp, just ask bush or quail.
Draft dodging generally refers to using legal means to avoid getting drafted, such as joining the national guard or getting student deferments. None of those are illegal. On the other hand, the boxer M. Ali refused to serve after getting a draft notice and went to prison for that. There is no current draft in the U.S.
