How do you feel about legalizing marijuana? Will it help or not help the countries problem with it?

Do you think legalizing it will get rid of the temptation for doing it because its illegal? Or do you think that it will cause just a greater problem? If so, any other suggestions on how to fix this?

Answers:
This is a hotly debated subject. I think legalizing it would certainly help the situation. Right now you have honest hard working citizens that smoke marijuana but are subject to some harsh penalty's if caught. If it were legalized and people could grow and carry a certain amount we wouldn't have near the overcrowding problem of the prisons and drug lords would be put out of business. Look at Holland, ever since they legalized marijuana, with certain guidlines, the use of harder drugs has dropped significantly and so has their crime rate. I don't believe people are tempted to smoke it because it's illegal. I think they are pressured by peers or are curious. I will admit I have indulged myself here and there. I have a good paying steady job, I pay my bills on time and I donate a lot of free time and money to charities. Is it so wrong to sit and enjoy a J instead of a beer?

I didn't know there was a large problem. I think the main thing it would do is increase the cookie dough industry. But I don't think it would increase or decrease any problems. It would just provide a new way for the government to get some sin tax.
Legalize all drugs and allow people to exercise self-control.

Then, take the millions of dollars the government is wasting on the 'war on drugs' and use it for better things like health care and the war on terror.
Legal or not legal people are still going to use it.

The real question is, do the benefits and problems created by banning it out weigh the benefits and problems created by having it legal.

The answer to that that would have to be no.

We are spending hundreds of billions on imprisonment and enforcement of the ban on marijuana which is a non addictive natural plant.

We could be taxing it at the same rate as alcohol for national income as well as cutting the spending required to keep it illegal.

Furthermore, the stalks from 7 acres of pot fields makes the same quantity of paper pulp as 1 acre of trees. The pot grows back every year to be harvested again the trees don't.
i think they should legalize it because a lot of people do smoke it. i think it will become lesser of a problem if it becomes legal.
I don't think it will stop people from smoking. But, face it, millions of people smoke anyway. Making it illegal doesn't seem to have helped much either.

Our country went through this with alcohol in the twenties. Making it illegal caused so much other crime - smuggling, tax evasion, even murder, that we gave it up. If we make marijuana legal, it becomes a valuable crop for farmers, the government can earn money from taxing it instead of spending millions trying to stop it, and people who smoke anyway can stop worrying about going to jail for a relatively harmless habit.
I don't believe that many people use marijuana just because it's illegal. I believe it's more for the feeling it provides.

I think it could cause a larger problem because it would then be an option for those who otherwise would not use because it is illegal.

Here are the issues... If it's made legal, you then have to be ready for the abuse problems that will occur. If you look at countries where it has been legalized they end up spending huge amounts on dealing with addition. Now if it is made legal you still might have a problem with, illegal product because the taxing will raise the price to the point where the black market product will still be in demand.

It would probably be safer for those who do used as the product would be regulated much like alcohol is regulated. But other than helping those who have a true medical use for it I don't beleive legalization helps much of anything.
my opinion is that liquor is more dangerous than marijuana. if marijuana was legalized, there won't be as many pushers on the streets nor as many killings.

I realized that there are so many other drugs sold on the streets, but we have to start somewhere.

I don't think that marijuana is as bad for you as they say it is. I do not use it, but a few of my friends do, and they drive a car as if they just smoked a reg. cigarette & they don't slur their words when they speak. drunks can't even stand up most of the time, let alone drive a car. you talk to them & they don't even know what planet they're on.

I'd rather be around a marijuana smoker than a drunk anyday.
70 billion $ per year war on drugs and the economics indicate we are losing(drug prices on the street are dropping: shows that the supply of them is high). Perhaps if we spent that money attacking serious drugs such as meth and coke we could start to gain ground. Besides that, cannabis is proven time and again SAFER than alcohol, which is perfectly legal.
