There's a big difference between an offense that a court can force you to stop doing, or that someone can sue you for, and a crime for which you would go to jail.


libel, slander, and defamation on not criminal offenses. They are civil causes of action, which can be brought by private parties. I am from The United States

Defamation in the UK is both a Civil and Criminal Offence. Criminal Libel is rarely used.
