Is this right, i think i just got violated?
i was in a grocery store and a police told me to come outside, he told me in front of the store that i matched a suspect that robbed a walmart that was across the street.i had to wait till the manager of the walmart came and said i wasnt the suspect, is this standard procedure?

You werent violated, you were an integral part of possibly solving a felony.
maybe not standard but good police work. Get over it and thank your stars you don't live in an area where the police would have just shot you THEN done the ID.

yes it is procedure. You weren't violated. Since you knew you weren't the person, what is the big deal about cooperating with the police? Be happy that the police are actively trying to cut down crime in your area. Get over it.

It sucks that you had to wait while they sorted it out, but that's the way police work has to go sometimes.
It could have been worse. There are a lot of similar stories that don't have your happy ending -- you could have had to go to jail and go into debt hiring a lawyer and defending yourself before it all got cleared up.
Yes. Poor police work would have been to simply arrest you because you matched the description and wait for the trial months later for the witness to exonerate you. You should be glad that the cops chose the better route.
The police can temporarily detain someone if they have a reasonable, articulable suspicion that you were involved in a crime. The fact that you match the description from a nearby robbery may be enough of a suspicion for a temporary stop like this.
However, even if there was a violation, because they let you go after a short time you would probably not be able to show any damages from the violation.
It also doesn't hurt to ask police if you are under arrest, or if you have the choice to do what they are telling you. Often times, they tell you to do something, whithout informing you that you have the right not to consent. However, the reality is that you don't necessarily want to piss a cop off, because even if they're wrong, they're still the guys with uniforms and guns!
