Right on; except for the clothes bit. Religions have their prescribed ways of being and I can understand their resistance to gay / lesbian marriage. However, with respect to the government / insurance companies / schools / etc. recognizing the union of two folks that want to spend the rest of their lives together in a stable relationship I can not fathom why there is a problem.
if God condemns gay people, then God is not perfect because he discriminates
If you think they should be allowed a city hall marriage then why not in a church. What's the big difference? It's all the idea of marriage.
Let them have civil unions, Same benefits just do not call it marriage.
Well it's not really a question, but I'll give my two cents.
I say we let the states decide. Liberal states can have it their way, and conservative states can have it their way. If that's not good enough, why don't we phone up Iran and tell them that they have to allow gay marriage too?
If it isn't good enough to let progressive communities pass laws, and you have to force other communities to accept certain things that are strictly forbidden by their faith, then you have to go all the way with it and demand that all of Asia, South America, and Africa legalize gay marriage too.
Politics is local, you can't force your views on everyone else, whether you're pro or anti-gay marriage. Either join a community that believes the way you do, vote to change the law in he majority, or go to war over it.
Otherwise, it's time to shutty.
No one should be allowed to marry. Period. I think the divorce rate backs me up completely.
Marriage is a legal process. When you marry, you enter into a long-term contract. The stipulations are clear, "For better or for worse." If you don't like, wait about 10 years or leave.
In some ways marriage is only between the two individuals - but there are other aspects that do carry over into the public sphere. My belief is that the government shouldn't give preferential treatment to anyone. In the case of marriage, if two people want to have special legal status to protect assets and guarantee certain medical advantages - good for them. But I don't think my tax dollars should be subsidizing the lives of anyone - straight or gay. Marriage and civil unions are not the same thing - and that's a good thing. Marriage is - in my view - a religious commitment (in contemporary culture - very rare) because of this, the govt should have not say at all.
That ain't no problem however if they get that right then they want to do away with Mothers Day Fathers Day and want us to bend over so they don't feel bad for being so F'ed up!
In order to have gay marriage we would have to change the definition of the word "marriage". I dont think we need to start changing definitions of words to accomodate certain groups.do you?
