How do I resign in this situation?
I was hired for a job that will not actually start until Oct. The position is to serve as the director of a new after school kids program. It is in partnership with a national organization and a church organization. I have been to only a few meetings and it turns out that I am being pulled between these two groups and I forsee them having a big blow up and not even opening the program. Both groups tell me I work "for them" not the other group. Now to make matters more complicated, I have been working for 4 years at the church as the director of their parents day out program (PDO). I am wanting to leave this position as well due to all the "political" aspects of this job as well the complications from the new after school position. How do I resign? I don't have a "boss" but three different boards to report too (2 at the church and 1 with the national group) I don't see them on a regular basis since it is summer time for the PDO and the other job hasn't actually started.
Answers:
For the new position, I would write a letter to the chair of each board you report to informing them that you are resigning the position effective immediately.
Then, I would write a separate letter to the church for your other position. For this one, I would make sure give enough notice for them to begin the search for a new director, 2 weeks to a month.
Of course, if you think that this position is one that you might like if it were not for the politics, you may consider talking to one or more of your supervisors, letting them know your concerns, and that you want to continue in the position, but it is just not going to work if it keeps going this way.
Wriye a general letter to both organizations. Don't elaborate and thank them for keeping you in mind for the post.
Consider becoming a consultant to the organization instead of a manager. Thatway you can advise anyone at anytime on matters pertaining to all groups.
In the event somneone actually pins you down and tells you yes or no, you will then realize whom your boss is and then, either quit, or negotiate your position to consultant, keep the check each week and drop the crap...
