Is it wrong for my boss to...?
Ok heres the deal, I work retail at a clothing store, I have for about a year and a half, and I am really not enjoying it. An old co-worker got a job working for an accounting job that deals with alot of cash. I got a call from the manager there and she offered me a job, paying $4 more an hour than what I am making now, so I would be a fool not to take this oppourtunity, plus it would be great experience. But I need 2 work references, so Knowing that my manager (who is a hater) would give me a bad reference, I asked the assistant manager and 3rd key, whom I am very tight with, they said deffinetly. But my manager found out about my interview and got mad at them, and told them they couldnt be work references for me, just personal. I dont know why she is doing this to me, I am a very hard working young mother of a 2 year old boy, who is just trying to get ahead in life. my question is, is she legally allowed to do this? I tried looking up labour relation laws in Victoria BC CAN, no luck
Answers:
Go for the job and tell your friends that you or putting them down she can not stop them. if she does, then go to labor board and file against her for this. No one has the right to tell anyone they can not give you a reference for a job. She also can not keep you for bettering yourself.. I would go to her myself and tell her, that you have gone to labor board and if your work record is as good as you said, she can not give you a bad reference.. Make it a strong stand on your word.
Good luck and will be praying for you...
if you work under them then they can give a reference
no not at all everyone has a freedom of speech she cant make them but she can off the record threaten them so it just depends how tight they are with you if they are willing to loose there job over it ... but the only way that would happen is if she found out so yes its illegal but no one could prove it...
You do not really need her but if you were a bad worker why have you been there for so long your new job manager will see these, but if you want to get back go to the papers an tell her she is a real *****
Emotions aside, she can stop them. It's unethical for her to do so but she is within her rights to disallow them to give anyone a work reference as long as the policy is to give NO ONE a reference. Ths issue is that she cannot discriminate against you by singling you out.
Most companies these days do not give out references because of liability issues. They simply will only confirm your dates of employment, role & responsibility and your eligibility for rehire. The "personal" references should be adequate in addition to the above details for your new employer...good luck!
i hate people like that... grrrr.
