What happens if a law is wrong? (UK)?

If the population thinks a law is wrong but the government doesnt then what recourse is there to make the government back down? If any.
Governments should be accountable to people at all times for all decisions, especially ones where they were not part of the reasons why that government was elected.
I am asking about the UK here. Thanks.

You are making the assumption that the law is about right and wrong. In many cases it is neither right nor fair.

There is also the point of view of what is right and wrong anyway. For example some would say that a raping, murdering paedophile should be executed but others would say that the death penalty is wrong ... See where I am coming from here?

The UK like the USA and many, many others are allegedly democracies though that particular concept is perhaps debatable, in especially the UK and USA, but you can vote the law makers in or out. Don't expect, however, things to change too much.

You get rid of the party that keeps making them.
Your recourse is to vote them out at the next general election.
Dickens was right...the law is a ***
google "judicial review" to get an idea of how laws can be challenged
if you go to the PMs website you can start a petition (address below) and if you get enough signiatures then they will at least have to loook at it.

Or can go to local MP and bring it up with them who can in turn bring the matter up in prime ministers questions or something.

Thats about it really. If enouh people feel strongly enouh about something then the government will have to at least consider changing a law, after all we elect them so they have to at least try and keep us happy
The most effective way to get a law changed is through gaining support and publicity from wherever you can and lobbying the people who have the power. Your local MP is a good place to start.

It's no good simply voting for a different party, unless you know that they propose the change in their manifesto.
Try a protest march. Though I doubt if you will get enough people willing to get of their fat butts to take part.
Its called protesting.

Problem with politics is that they rely on very Opinionated views, most things are put into the laps of academics like professors who have no real life experience so they only draw on data supplied to them and from books.

This is why our country is so *ucked up. The academics think that they are doing the country a favour with their findings but they are not, they're crippling our already diminished freedoms further so we soon wont be able to fart in public without being fined and taxed on it.
the only law i can remember being changed due to public opinion was Margaret Thatchers poll tax, after enough people marched against it,she was forced to back down and change the way the tax was collected. other than that Labour was forced to cut the duty on petrol after the strikes and a public outcry about the cost and tax on it. So public opinion does count, but we all have to stand together and make ourselves heard, very difficult in this country, as we are all too busy looking after number one. Maybe we should take a leave out of the french book, they always seem to get their own way, by standing together, when they don't agree with something.
I am intrigued. What Law is it that the questioner would like repealing?
