Does using the media to deter crime unduly increase society's fear of crime?

I don't know how you would use the media to deter crime unless you are talking about the MSNBC sting for internet preditors of a 15 year old girl. Is that it? I don't know if it would deter crime because they have snagged doctors, lawyers, business owners, etc. that should know better than to try to hook up with a 15 year old jail bait from the internet. If nothing else, it warns parents what can happen to their kids.
