Is it illegal to charge for tap water in restaurants in the UK?

So I'm in a restaurant and I've asked for tap water to take some headache tablet. They tell me it's against the restaurant policy to give out water. I thought by law you had to give water if asked. Could someone help me out here and send me a link to a Government page or something?

With that sense of entitlement I'm surprised you're not American. Restaurants can charge or not charge for anything they wish...including water.

I went to a Chinese around the corner last night and I saw on the menu that they charge for it and I was amazed. I drink beer so I wasn't too bothered though!
that just goes to show what our resturant and public houses think of us all they want is our money i thought they could charge you for the glass not the water
I work at a bar and often try to charge £2.50 for a glass of water - haven't had anyone fall for it yet though and probably wouldn't take the money if they did!
legally they cannot charge you for the water - BUT - they can charge you for the use of the glass!
Its crap!! that restaurants can charge you for water!! sad but I dnt think it is illegal because the fact they pay their water rates. Its quite sad but thats human for you!!!!
Bottled water is nothing more than filtered tap water, even though it may be labelled spring water. People pay big bucks for that scam.
