I wrote online (naming names) of an incident that happened to me. During this writing certain unprovable...?
points were told to me, which I wrote in my story, that did make the motivation of the main character in my story much clearer. These unprovable ponts were very damaging to the character of the main character in my autobiographical story. I was told that this person was threatening to go to a lawyer so I removed the story from the internet. I received a letter from a lawyer dated the same day I removed the story. The story was cached and I was told to remove the cache over which I had no control. I was also told to put up an apology in the place of the story, which I did. I received a letter from the lawyer saying that my apology was not good enough and I was dictated an apology that I was to put up and told that I had to pay this person's lawyer's fees. I removed my apology and did not put up the dictated one. It took two months but there is now no longer any reference online to the story or the apology. They are threatening court and still want the money. Am I in legal trouble?

Yes, you are.
What a thoroughly dumb thing to do.
What were you thinking...? You cannot slander someone on the internet or anywhere else.
I hope they sue the socks off of you.
