Hitting kids, ok?

My ex girlfriend is 13 and her mom is a drunk. The other day her mom hit her in the arm giving her a bruise and she called the cops. The cops came and found she was drunk and that she had hit her but they didnt do anything. We live in california. Is this illegal and should the cops have done anything?

Answers:
Hitting kids isnt very good for the child, it makes the parent feel strong but comes at the price of a wounded child, emotionally.
I do not think the cops can do much unless they were younger than 13. It seems like some teens would use that to war with their parents and is a slippery slope to believe a teen... It is a sad part of our culture that we do not love our children,,, more..

If she was drunk yes. if she wasnt drunk no...
umm I dont think they didnt do anything. she proby will have to go to court and I am sure that she had a choice to go to A.T. I am sure I dont think you got the FULL story
Her mum should NOT have done that.
That's abuse.

The cops should of done something.
cops are reluctant to intervene unless they feel there is a severe danger to a child.what happened is wrong and should have been dealt with better.like taking the mother out back and beating her with their nightsticks till she was sober...
if the cops see a bruise or any type of mark she would/should have been taken to jail
The mother should not touch the child if she was drunk.
Back when I was growing up if a kid did something wrong,, a good swat on their butt never hurt anyone...We also learned a lesson from it.
If the cops think the situation is that bad they will call child services. the cops can ask questions but, it's really up to the responding officers how the situation is handled. everyone has problems and drunks aren't the best parents but, that doesn't mean their bad parents either or that they don't care. If you think your friend is in danger than you need to talk to someone at school like a counselor or your parents or you can call child services. if you call child services they are required by law to go to your friends house and check everything out.
