What are the new health and safety rules for window claeaners?

can you please tell me the new health and safety rules for april 2008 for window cleaners, both for doing domestic houses business sheltered housing, 3 stories high and business contracts, i am a window cleaner and i have been told i must use a pole and cannot use a ladder, can you please help with some info on all of this. thank you

The rules are different depending on whether or not you are an employed or self-employed window cleaner - I suspect you are the latter.
Ladders are not banned although there are very sensible requirements in terms of using stabilizers etc. above certain heights.
Rather than set out the various rules and guidance in this answer, I have attached the relevant page from the HSE website.
Ultimately, if you are self-employed, it boils down to this: - you can clean windows whatever way you want, including dangling from a ledge by your toenails if you wish - no-one will arrest you.
If you get injured, then it's your fault.
However, if you injure someone else and have not been following the guidelines, you may find yourself on the wrong end of a writ.


I didn't think window cleaners still existed. I haven't seen one for years.
Try your local council's website...they should have the guidelines.
