Can my doctor give out information about my visit?

Let say my bank want to know information about a doctor visit I sent them! can they call my doctor and ask for information about my visit! information like what date I was there, or why I was there!

Is it legal for my doctor to give out this kind of information!

Answers:
Your doctor can not legally give out information that could or would make someone recognize you. He can give basics ie: I had a 23 year old female come in to my office with symptoms including vomiting and head ache. I prescribed her tylenol and rest. bla bla. he can tell someone off the street that, so long as they do not know it was you. It is a touchy subject though, because if he said that too someone you knew and they knew that was your doctor and put two and two together. The doctor legally could not have told them. That would be a rare case though.

i don't know if things like the date are illegal, but things like your results probably are.
Why did you send your Bank information about a doctor visit? If you are asking for leniency not to pay due to an illness they have a right to confirm that you were actually ill.

I don't know why else they would care.
No.
The date is borderline and there would have to be relevance. I'd love to see a bank prove that. Most docs won't take the chance without a court order and a trip to their practice and personal lawyers.

HIPAA nails down what results can and cannot be divulged. Basically it's only what you authorize which defaults to nothing.
If your bank is also your employer they can ask the date you were there...nothing else. And if your Doc tells them WHY you were there you have a lawsuit to pursue.
The laws regarding your rights to privacy with your doctor vary depending on what country (and even state) you live in. By HIPPA laws in Ohio, if you use debit or a check to pay for your visit, the only thing the bank can ask for is when and how much...that is the date of the charge/check and how much it was for. They are also entitled to your check (or a copy of it with all the new EFT stuff) or the slip you signed authorizing the debit charge (if you signed something). They cannot ask WHY you were there. If they did, you might want to look into possible recourse against the bank and the doctor's office if they release said info (I would certainly find both a new bank and doctor).
If you are making a claim for his bill to be paid, or claiming you saw him for a work related injury, they are entitled to verify it. That is done by the HR office not your direct boss and it's not like the information will be made public to others. If you already gave the info to the bank, I would assume you thought they were entitled to know info about it and sometimes they need to clarify the date of service, or the bill was coded wrong, etc. Chill.
No, this is illeagal, he has to have your permission to give anyone any information on you.
