What is the controversy of elected official holding an elected position being convicted of an felony?

when an elected official holds a public office and get charged/or is facing charges such as emblezzement, should he/she be made to step down from office. what does society thinks about an elected official holding office an is accused of a felony?

Answers:
Someone who takes unlawful advantage of a position of trust should be compelled to step down.

However, if the person is merely charged, but not found guilty, should society punish an innocent person.

I think more facts need to be flushed out, as well as what kind of record the politician had before the allegations.

Yes he/she should step down or be impeached.

God Bless
If he is an ethical person, he/she would step down. This applies even if he were innocent and was falsely accused. Some hold onto their office as long as possible. It would be difficult to do the elected job as long as the cloud of uncertainty hangs over their head, and even disrupt that particular government entity.
We are faced with a double edged sword here in the fact that this country was based on a few principals one of them being "innocent til proven guilty" not innocent til charged or onnocent til facing charges. On the other hand we do not want corruption in our government either so as hard as it is we must hold the same ideals for elected officials we do for all citizens and let justice prevail. Once it is decided if innocent the official tries to go on with his life but sadly is hard after ordeal. If convicted should be stripped of office and all benefits and jailed like any other citizen we hold to the same ideals
I hate to say this but...google Louisiana.
They have history made on this subject. Just today one stepped down.
