Court date for shoplifting?
Hi, I'm 23 I work for a company in the mall...I was not arrested but the loss prevention head of security guy took me aside one day at work and said he knew I was taking stuff...I admitted, and i wrote an apology to the company and agreed to pay back everything...I took about $450 in tops in total over a period of time working there, and I took about $500 in cash...I know this is beyond horrible and I am ashamed and embarrased by what I did. The total came to $970 that i owe. About a couple weeks ago I got a letter in the mail for a court date and its at my towns municipal building...just a first hearing and than its going to superior court, i live in nj. I have never done anything like this ever in my life it's my first offense and my record is clean. I heard that usually if its a 1st offense they will probably fine you and give you probation and most definitely a criminal record...but you won't go to jail for a 1st time offense...is this true? Thanks.

Not always, you are probably looking at 15 to life!~!
DID YOU POST BOND I DON'T GET IT IF YOU WERE NEVER ARRESTED ARE CHARGED WITH ANYTHING HOW CAN YOU BE GOING TO COURT. I SUUGEST YOU GET A LAWYER TO FIND OUT WHAT'S GOING ON IF YOU WERE NEVER READ YOUR RIGHTS. YOUR LAWYER CAN GET THAT CASE DROPPED AGAINST YOU THAT IS IF IT'S A CASE
The dollar amount makes it a felony! However since its your first offense they are likely to agree to a plea deal That makes it a misdemeanor. You could see jail but its doubtful if your Attorney says no. You can expect
Fines less than $1000.00 (if misdemeanor)
Restitution in amount stolen
Probation
Community Service
Ban from store (maybe)
You may also receive a letter of "Civil Demand" this will be monies your asked to pay outside of court fines etc and the amount could be between $500.00 to $1000.00 depending on your state laws
