Court thing over woman's face?
I'm watching a local drug treatment court program and there is a woman with something over her face. It looks like she might be speaking into it. What is that thing?
Answers:
Its a microphone cone. Some court reporters are required to repeat, verbatim, what is said in court into a special mask over their face that has a microphone in it connected to a tape recorder.
They also stenographically record what is said as well.
This is done because each court reporter develops their own stenographic language and style so that no two court reporters notes can be read.
By requiring them to repeat, verbatim into a tape recorder, what is said in court, leaves no doubt in the event the court reporter gets killed before the transcript is made.
A transcript (or record) of a trial and most hearings, is often required in order to preserve the right to appeal.
The Stenograph machine.
Its like shorthand only quicker.
She's the court reporter, taking a verbal transcription for the record. (If this: http://johnrsweet.com/personal/wind/art/... is the device you're talking about)
