Mr Howard, I'd like to know if you plan to increase benefits for carers?

Carers are amoung the most disadvantaged people in Australia, whose needs are on average higher than non-carers. Many carers and those they care for are living in poverty because Centrelink benefits are inadequate and because they are caring for someone they are unable to go out to work, which is restricted by Centrelink anyway. Being a carer is just like a full time job, except with no overtime, no sickness benefits, no holiday pay, no rostered days off, no lunch breaks or breaks of any kind and no annual or parental leave - much like a job under your AWAs, I imagine! I am a carer, living in poverty. My cats eat better than I do. I cannot afford to eat many days because I do not receive enough from Centrelink to cover my living expences. I recommend the immediate tripling of all Centrelink benefits for all carers and the disabled people for whom they care, and make all carers and disabled people eligible for Rent Assisstance. Please, Mr Howard, break the poverty cycle.

Answers:
eat better. lose the cats.

I'm really sorry you are going through such financial distress, but freelawanswer.com really isn't the proper space for your letter to address the problem, it's not what the forum is for. I would highly suggest you write letters directly to Mr. Howard and other governement figures to make them aware of the problem and hopefully they can work for a solution. But I think you will find they aren't on freelawanswer.com waiting to answer your letter.

There is also a great carer organization in Australia that may be able to help you or at least help you get your letters to the right place. Many carers must balance a job in addition to their caring duties, have you looked into perhaps into respite care? You should not sacrifice yourself because you are a carer. You must take care of yourself. To be a good carer you must take care of yourself, which includes eating right and taking care of you.

FYI carers in the USA don't get anything. No benefits, no assistance, nothing. My husband is a disabled veteran, I don't get any assistance because I care for him. Be thankful you get something.

Cancel your internet subscription, sell your computer, sell your cats.

What about moms, they don't get paid s*** for their 24/7 "job"!
I'm not an australian but I am a caregiver and I know personally the day and night vigil you stand, and what it is like to constantly care for, feed, and clean up, a helpless person who can't do without you. I know it is a labor of love. If nobody else values what you do, know that I do.

I am going to pass along the sites that have helped me so so much when I was scraping by. I think they will help you get by on that next to impossible budget.
