And why would you be "just growing" marijuana?
In Calfornia it is still illegal but not such a big deal. I would grow there. I sure would smoke there. Driving through LA stoned is fun. Just like Cheech and Chong.

There are state laws and there are federal laws. In some states with medical marijuana laws, it's legal to grow for personal use; however, it's against federal law to do so. Ain't government fun?
No place. The federal government regulates the all commerce related to drugs, including the "cultivation" and "manufacture" of them. You can get a license to grow, I believe, as part of a scientific research study, but the requirements are very strict.
Oregon and California are the only 2 states I know of that have some laws protecting cannabis growers/users

but, as stated above ... there is a federal law that prohibits use, and it supersedes the state law
ADD: by the way ... there are people that smoke 'legal' federal marijuana (somewhere the federal govt must produce it) ... 13 to be exact, there were grandfathered in when Nixon criminalized medical marijuana in the late 60's ... you can learn about them in a documentry on showtime called "in pot we trust" ... they are the only Americans who can legally smoke weed at a federal level
I've heard that ALASKA has some progressive lenient laws on this subject. But only for personal consumption!

The state Supreme Court in 1975 ruled that an adult's rights to limited marijuana possession was protected under the state constitution's privacy provisions.
Nowhere, marijuana is completely illegal in every state.

It's not legal to grow anywhere. It may be decriminalized in places, but that usually only applies to possession of small amounts, not cultivation. I've read that what you do in your house in Alaska is your own business, and they don't prosecute for less than 25 plants. Certain countys in California issue prescriptions which allow people to grow for medicinal purposes, but this is not state wide. No matter what state you are in, no matter what the local opinions on marijuana, it's still illegal on the federal level and they can come in and bust you at anytime or anywhere.
In many states possessing under an ounce of cannabis is either and infraction of misdemeanor. basically you pay a fine. Growing even a small amount is a felony in every state including California.
Having over a certain amount of plants (varies from place to place) will get you some serious mandatory prison time. You could also loose your property.

I know a women in Okla-cOmA that had several plants and this was her second time getting caught. The Judge gave her 5 years, but she didn't think that was fair and the case went to trial. Her peers gave her 15 years, and her house and vehicles are now with someone else, auctioned off..sad but a true story.
