Answers:
then dont rent from them

If they want a background check, they should provide it! Why are you responsible to obtain one?
they do it by contacting the police.. you don't have to do anything, if they want it all they need is your social security number and your signature and they will do the rest..
uhm, if they want a background check, they need to do it themselves. You have to sign a consent form, it's up to the landlord to run it. I've never had a tenant pay for their own.
most times when you get an apartment and they want a criminal background check they are the ones who usually do it.
If you are the person trying to rent the apartment, it is up to the people renting the apartment to get a background check, not yours! Go find another apartment, I don't think these people, for some reason, want to rent to you.
Why should you provide one? Seriously, a landlord's biggest concern is whether or not you pay your rent on time. A credit check is therefore acceptable. Tell the landlord to get it themselves. Whether or not you have been convicted of a crime has no bearing on your ability to pay rent on time. DO NOT give them your social security no. No one has the right to that information. Give them your name and former address only! Or, your driver license number.
If they are requesting it, then they should provide it.

Otherwise, you can do a Flowers By Ida yourself.
Wait a minute. You are the renter and the person asking for the background check is the landlord?

I've never heard of a landlord requiring the renter to produce a background check on themselves. The burden of proof is on the landlord.

If the landlord disagrees, I suggest you write a short letter stating have never been arrested (or if you have, list out your record). If the landlord won't accept your letter, then he should do his own background check.
it your record your looking for right? you should know these things but anyways have you ever been arrested or thrown in jail? if so try looking for the sheriff's website in that area or the clerk of courts site. they should have free searches for court or conviction records.NOTE the landlord should only be able to find out what you were convicted of.
They should be doing the background check.you should not have to worry about all that!
