I have a question about paying for seatbelt tickets...?
A few months ago, i got pulled over for not having my seatbelt on all the way. I had it tucked under my arm. He gave me the ticket, and I have yet to pay it. I have 4 more days to do so.
I do not have the money to pay for it right now. Im a stay at home Stepmom and unemployed. My boyfriend pretty much takes care of me, and he doesn't even know I got the ticket. He would be ticked off. So What do I do?
Do I show up at the courthouse and explain my situation to them and ask them if they can work with me on it, like maybe make payments to them? or will they take me to jail if I can't pay it all right when I go there? I'm scared!
Answers:
Show up and explain...typically they will work out something with you. Or just fess up to your boyfriend and get the money from him...unless you mean ticked off in a violent way - in which case you got bigger problems than a seatbelt violation.
Go to court and explain that you cannot pay it at the current time. They will set up a payment plan. In some jurisdictions they may even eliminate most of the fine and give you community service instead.
Go to court, explain your situation, ask for time to pay. Most courts will show leniency if you are honest with them.
It would be a big mistake to just not pay it, or not appear in court. This would lead to a warrant being issued, and you would probably go to jail.
You should see if you can still file a dispute and have the charge set aside (or suspended), on promise of one year of good behaviour. You did have the belt on, but perhaps not properly, so that would tend to show you're willing to follow the law.
If it is too late for that, you need to see the magistrate about making payments. If you do NOT pay, they will definitely put it into the warrant system and you will have a serious problem next time you're stopped or try to renew your license, or whatever.
