If I pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge, will it keep me from getting a federal government job?
It was ten years ago (February 1997). I served the time and paid all the fines. I haven't been in trouble since then (not even a speeding or parking ticket).

It depends on the agnecy and the nature of your work. Usually when conducting background checks, the government agencies are trying to see if you can be blackmailed. Meaning if you disclose all information to them, it usually doesn't affect your job, unless it's a felony. Just make sure to reveal the information on the security form, they WILL find it. If the case is closed and has been resolved there should be no issue.
I can also depend on what you were charged with. If it had anything to do with drugs it could hurt you no matter what agency it is.
Be truthful on the application. If you feel there is need for a longer explanation than there is room for put as much as you can on the form then attach you entire explanation. Provide them with the charge as it reads on the court document, the date it was disposed of, case and file number as well as the address of where the record is filed. Probably a county court house some where.
If you know someone that works in law enforcement they can pull all the info up for you and give you a print out. I don't know if local agencies can still get FBI information. If they can you could find out if anything has been filed with the FBI
