Depending on where you live, it is likely not true. Most states/countries have a legal age of majority at 18. You still have some control and rights regarding your daughter.
There may be some things that you cannot do-- however more than likely your friend is either pulling your leg, or is taking something he/she heard out of context.

She is legally responsible for herself now however you still have the maternal rights and morals as a mother - despite losing your child benefit :) She can pretty much do whats she wants now though.
under UK law she is not an adult till she is 18, course she can have sex legally now she is 16 and go on the pill without telling you

It sounds like your friend doesn't know much - children are minors, and are under your supervision until they turn 18.
A child can attempt to become legally independent (in certain cases) but unless they plan on moving out and supporting themselves, then this would be a pointless effort.
While ever she is living in your house you have all the rights you need. It is only when she moves out that you 'lose' your rights as such. In other words, its your house so you make the rules and it is up to the children to appreciate those rules or move out.
Depends on where you live, In the USA most girls are considered adults at 17 some at 18 (while boys it's still 18). I've never heard of a state considering a girl and adult at 16, you can check with your local law inforcement but I believe your friend is mistaken there.
If shes still under your roof then she still has to listen to you. My mother always told me that while you are under my roof you will abide by my rules or move out, seems fair
When i turned 16 I moved out of home. The day i moved out became the day my parents had no say in my life.
They were there for me if i needed some guidance but we both knew it was my choice at the end of the day.
like some have stated i beleive you lose certain disiplain qualities no matter what age your child is the day they leave the family nest.
However... at the tender age of 16 if you do get into trouble with the police i beleive they still contact your parents even if you no longer live at home... right up until you reach 18
u only have no rights to her personal business in the dr. office. they will not let u in the examination room or tell u what they talked about with ur daughter or what she asked them or whats wrong with her..other than this she is still under ur supervison cause she is a minor. u are still responsible for her actions.

Thats pretty much correct. The only thing you can stop her doing legally is stop her marrying till she is 18. Although she cant legally drink or go clubbing or drive you cant tell her what to do anymore.
She signs all her own medical forms now, she can apply for her own passport, she can go where she pleases and when she pleases and there is nothing legally you can do about it.
The police cannot bring her home if she decides to go away on holiday without you.
Equally though she is not your responsability now. You dont have to feed and clothe her. You can make her leave your house as well.

No, its not true!! But as a 16 year old she does have more rights than before and with your consent can do more...But 18 is the real age you lose more control..But trust her to do the right thing as you've taught her...I still need my mum and Im 25...
