What are my rights under consumer/contract law when I cancel a service?

I subscribe to Supanet.com for internet. I now work for a telecom co & am eligible for reduced staff rates. I contacted Supanet & told them I want to give canx notice, I assumed 1 months would be standard, but was told that the canx would be from 27/09/07 & I would be billed for the full term of the contract, which apparently runs till 04/11/07

I dont recall signing a contract since a 12 month one in 2004. The only other communication I received was a loyalty offer where they upgraded my service for free, I signed to say I'd accept, & believe it's this they referred to in my call, yet I don't remember there being a mention of contract terms.

It seems unfair that I've been tricked into signing something & that I need to pay for the remainder of the supposed term even though service will cease 27/09/07

I requested a copy of the signed contract, but I'd appreciate it if you could let me know what rights/options I have under contract/common/consumer law

Thanks
JP

You are doing it right so far. Send the notice and get the contract. There may be defenses if it is not clear. Then simply refuse to pay. That puts the ball in their court. If they pursue it in court you can defend or pay but there is no reason to just voluntarily accept their assertion that you must pay.

1 month is generally enough. Contact the service provider and ask to speak with a supervisor, they might be able to help. However, if you did sign a contract (they are fairly standard when you get any new upgrades or equipment) then you may be SOL.
Every time you continued for a further term you effectively renewed your contract. Just tell them that you will not renew on the given date at the end of the full years term and cancel you direct debit.
