Should Vick really do time for killing dogs?
I know somw of you have participated in this type of question, but I had to see the answers for myself. He has no previous record, and though killing dogs is viewed as "inhumane", I see plenty of dead animals, including dogs along the country roads and highways I drive. I feel like this is a witch hunt and that it doesn't warrant jail time. I mean it was only 8 dogs. Why is the FBI involved? Why is that I get the feeling that this has more to do with letting OJ off than it does killing a few aggressive dogs?
It may seem like I minimize this action, because to me there are more serious crimes committed by players, and the public in general. I don't think this is deserving of jail time. Your thoughts, in a well thought out, respectful manner, please! Please no disrespectful comments!

The problem is, people have mixed up priorities because they can't see beyond their own narrow lives. Some people have and REALLY love their dogs. If Michael Vick had killed THEIR dog, they wouldn't have wanted him to go to jail, they would have wanted him to go to the electric chair.
Now, I like animals. I have 2 cats, and frankly, if someone intentionally hurt one of them, woe to them and their posterity forever. BUT...
They can't protect little kids walking home from school from gang violence. They can't keep crack dealers out of kindergarten. They can't deal with the insurgents in Iraq. They can't get people to walk in crosswalks. They can't keep people from scalping tickets to the Yankees games. They can't keep cops from shooting innocent people. They can't keep muggers from punching old ladies in the face. They can't deal with the epidemic of teenage pregnancy. They can't make a tax code that is fair. They can't deal with the immigration problem. They can't keep dirty politicians from stealing everything they can get their hands on...
BUT at least they can keep ALL pro quarterbacks from killing dogs. Now I feel better about the country I live in...
Not.
He needs to be locked up.
yep.
nope.
He should do the maximum time allowed as well as pay the max in fines, I hope he goes broke. Running over a dog is usually an accident, Fighting dogs is not.
yes he should.
The investigation into this particular ring began around 2000. He knew what was going on. He just thought his "celebrity" would get him off. He was probably right, but he SHOULD serve time and get kicked out of the NFL. We need to stop making millionaires out of criminals.
Yes, its not fair, would you like it if someone made you do something you wouldn't like.
jail time may be a bit too harsh, but he should be suspended from a season or two, and put on probabtion through the court...maybe he'll think twice a/b killing dogs
He needs to be slathered in BBQ sauce and tossed into a pit full of hungry dogs.
The kind of cruelty in the way these dogs died needs to be punished, I believe if found guilty he should certainly do time. The kind of person that could do that to an animal shouldn't be able to walk away scott free.
Yes, I think he needs to do some time. If it was you or I, we'd have to do time, record or no record.
Okay...when you see dead animals on the side of the road, chances are it was an accident, not on purpose. Killing a living creature on purpose (and not for survival either)? I think that's pretty sick, and deserves jail time.
Yes because there are more things going on than just the incredibly cruel pit fights (illegal all by itself). There is the kidnapping of family pets that are used to "train" the fighters (how else do you think the pits get used to the idea of killing). There is the illegal betting. There is the FEDERAL crime of transporting dogs across state lines for the purpose of both betting and fighting.
Vick is done.
He had better take the 2 years he is going to be offered and he had better be humble.
By the way the 8 dogs are just the ones they found or heard about. You can bet it is way more than that.
Sorry Vick may be someone you like as a player, but he has really, really, really bad judgement in hobbies and friends.
I think that anyone who harms living things in that way should be punished, and especially if he killed 8 dogs, but jail dosen't seem right. They should make him work in an animal shelter as community service for something like 100 hours, (spread out, of course,) to make up for it, and he should have to pay all of the money that he made off of hurting dogs. I don't think jail will make him feel the true remorse that public service working with dogs will. (of course, someone should be watching him every minute of it.)
He didn't kill one dog, he didn't do it by accident...he took part in an activity which included electrocuting and drowning dogs, not to mention using under-aggressive dogs as "chew toys" for other dogs...these dogs are tortured from birth, including removing their ears and starving them, and then killing them brutally when their "entertainment value" is gone.
While I don't think a first-time offender who expresses remorse should get maximum allowable jail time for this, he definitely needs to get a significant sentence.
It's not that he just killed them, he tortured them and made them fight. Any shrink or sociologist will tell you that torturing animals is a stepping stone for most serial killers.
Yeah, he deserves to do time.
Two kids ages 15 and 17 got 10 years each for torturing and killing a puppy here in California. I will spare the details as they are horrific.
If Vick is convicted, Let's wait for him to be found guilty first, he should do at least that.
Animal or not, these dogs were tortured and slaughtered.
This is not killing a cow for hamburger. This is intentional TORTURE!
Hang is A**.
Proud California Conservative.
No dogs killed alot of blacks during the civil rights movment i dont care for dogs
...if he is convicted..."yes". (or... put him in the "pit" with a dog or two). Rottweilers, not Pit bulls
Lock him up. The FBI is involved because of the illegal gambling involved. Those charges carry more time than they cruelty to animals.
You said where is PETA protesting hunting. They have always protested hunting.
As far as dogs flying out of the bed of pick ups, it has probably happened but don't give the impression that it is a dialy occurence, and if that were to have happened it isn't intentional. If I get into an accicent and kill someone sould I do the same jail time as if I force 2 people to fight to the death and if one doesn't do it well I will hang them?
I'm torn--on the one hand my vegetarian conscience says that killing all animals is inherently inhumane. On the other, dog-fighting is barbarism unmitigated.
I've seen videos from a slaughterhouse, and those animals suffer a LOT when they die, and lead terrible lives leading up to their deaths, too. Stuffed full of drugs, living in feedlots stomping around in their own feces, locked in cages, etc. All so we can have $2.00 a pound hamburger.
Is dog fighting worse? I don't know. It certainly seems like the suffering inflicted on the dogs is totally needless, and done just for human entertainment. There's something gory about people who get their jollies by watching animals in pain.
I think a long term community service and some education is in order for Michael Vick.
I am not judge or jury, but all my animals have been adopted,so this behavior to me is intolerable..
Yes he needs to serve some type of time. Laws are made to keep order. Subjecting an innocent dog to fight till the death is F'ing stupid. What if it was your dog? What if one of dogs bites you or kills a young child because it has taught to kill? All the money he has and he has to have entertainment like that. He's sick regardless of race, color, athletic ability, etc. Put him in a cage and let him fight every few weeks until his death
Killing animals is NOT normal ! Therefore he needs some sort of punishment to get it into his head that it is NOT sane or legal. Those dogs you see on the roads were not killed by someone intentionally,In my opinion,Vicks is mentally ill.Only 8 dogs!! Get real.
It's not only the horrific way he killed those 8 dogs, but the way the many others were raised specifically for fighting. Do you know how a dog is raised to be aggressive? It's abused. A lot. Have you ever had a pet? Now imagine someone abusing it in every way imaginable so that eventually it will be pitted against other dogs in a battle to the death. Dog fighting is disghusting and deplorable. It happens all over, yes, and authorities are doing what they can to get to all those who abuse animals. Why do you have more respect for a professional athlete who used his money for such filth than for these innocent creatures? Even if his defense is true, that it was only on his property, he should still be held liable.
Was he killing dogs or did he pretty much just go to a bad party? All we know, and we don't really know this yet, is that he was there, but honestly his responsibility should end there. Millions of dollars are allready flushed because of what amounts to a technicallity. I love dogs, I have two big dogs myself, and I don't approve of this happening but this goes to far. Destroying the most promising career in years in his field plus jail time? I was amazed when people where talking about regular season suspensions. I assumed a legal fine is in order for being there, but jail time? Surely that's reserved for people organizing and truely causing this.
Yes, I think he should do time for it. Aside from it being inhumane, cruelty to animals whatever the charges are he is a role model for all of our children. As parents it is our ultimate responsibility to give our children a set of values and morals, but he is in the public eye. If he did not do time for his deeds what kind of message is that sending our youth. It would tell them that being rich and famous makes you above the law. Why should he be above the law? Do you think if you were caught in the same situation the law would show you any mercy. I do not think so. Unfortunately money and status are power the majority of the time, but it should not be. Everyone should be accountable for their actions just the same. I want my children to grow thinking that all are equal be it for good deeds or bad.
I don't care who it is. If they do the crime they should do the time. Killing Dogs is Not exceptable. They can not defend theirselves. Let me ask you, would you put your Child in a ring, and have another child rip his throat out, or pull out his stomach? Or even biting off an ear. To a lot of people a dog is the most loyal animal there is. You can hit them they come right back for love. You can kick them they come right back for love, but let someone try to attack you, they would give their life to stop it.
Yeah go ahead, and kill your best friend.
The bottom line is, animal cruelty is a felony. The law was written just for people who intentionally hurt animals. There is no more flagrant example of this than dog fighting. Unless you can convince lawmakers to change the laws, Vick is going to jail.
