Advice please.my longterm boyfriend and I had an apartment. It was in his name and the lease ended in...?

April 2007. I renewed the lease in my name (it is no longer in his) in April 2007. He promised that he would pay half the rent and he signed a written agreement stating that he was responsible for half the rent. During this month my boyfriend moved out and is no longer paying me for half the rent. This written agreement is signed by the both of us, though was not done in the presence of a notary nor an attorney. What are my legal options if any at this point? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am stuck with rent that I cannot afford on my own.

Answers:
You can file a lawsuit in a civil claims court demanding recovery of the finances.

As long as the document was signed by the both of you you have a solid platform to stand on. That piece of paper will be your best friend proving to the local judge the agreement between the two of you and the obligation he has failed to fulfill.

A. Judge Judy

B. If you had been a better girl friend he would still be there.

C. Best of luck
small claims. The written agreement should be sufficient. You do not need a notary or lawyer to make a contract legally binding, although it would be helpful in the event that he disputes that it is his signature. Do you have any proof that he paid you half before? Ie a cancelled cheque or something.

You can take him to small claims court, although you would likely only get a few months rent to cover the time it would take you to get another room mate.
