What are your opinions on human euthanasia?

I am for it in certain situations. After watching several family members suffer and die from various cancers (all of which deemed terminal a few years beforehand), I strongly support it.

When the case is terminal and the quality of life is being confined to a bed, writhing in pain, it should be performed with consent of patient and family.

Seeing a beloved pet being euthanized was nearly calming and relieving. She simply fell asleep and her breathing slowly stopped. It's very peaceful, and I believe so for her, too, as she gave no whimpers or pained expressions as the procedure was performed. It was certainly better than the past life she lived.

I strongly advocate it with good judgment. This is a touchy and tough subject, but I would love to know others' opinions.

Answers:
I understand the pain and anguish of watching a loved one suffer and eventually die from an illness such as cancer. I stood by my father as he suffered and died from cancer. It took over three years and his last days were hard. Yet, I do not support the euthanasia theory at all. I would not trade one moment I spent with my father as he died. It was awful and hard but yet it too is a natural part of the life cycle. He knew I was there and there is no greater love bond than one shared when you hold your loved ones hand as they pass on. His last words to me were You Are Loved. He was a wonderful gentle man, and I hate cancer, but I know he would not of wanted it any other way. Why do we try to make hard things in life easier not just for the ones suffering but mostly for ourselves? I hope I will be able to have the time in my last days to consider my life and passing.

I believe if they are suffering and exausted all other options and want to choose how they go out and not spen their last days bed ridden and in pain i would'nt judge them for it
I agree with you. I admire Oregon for taking the stand that it did to provide that choice for its citizens.
There are many arguments for or against it. In the aggregate, I am for it. There is nothing more sick and twisted that making a terminal ill patient suffer excruciating pain for what can only be religious reasons, when they're going to die anyway. We treat our animals better than that.
Why is it that we can put our pets down so they do not suffer but we have to watch our loved ones suffer...I feel it is better for our loved ones who want to be put down to do it because every now and then once will pull a trigger or overdose just to try to end their own life. How inhumane are we that it is o-kay to put a pet down but not a loved one?
I pretty much agree.
It would scare the heck out of me. It seems once you open that door that it would sweep through like the grim reaper.

Hopefully this will never happen and when the time is right then we slip slowly and naturally away.

I keep thinking that euthanasia is murder. Yikes.

You put your question well though.
All for it
Euthanasia for humans and animals is different. With humans I believe turning off life support is okay, but they also cut off your food and water. I do not agree with that part. With humans it is not a shot and they are gone..it can take days and days for the person to starve to death. I know I have my living will done...turn off life support (heart and breathing only) after a couple months and keep my food and water going until I die. If I am able to survive on my own I will. Your right it is touchy and a personal choice. I can only say everyone young and old needs a living will (you get them at your local hospital). That way your family does not have to make that horrible decision when/if that time comes.
i firmly believe it in...and i know of what i speak.

i think a person who is facing a terminal illness with no hope of recovery and knows that they will linger in pain has the right to self determination in this respect.

it should be agreed upon by the person, the doctors and family giving input into the decision but the final say should be the person themselves. i have let mine know my feelings on this subject so that all are aware. i have discussed option with my doctor and have been advise that when you reach that point, nutritional needs are ignored by the body as it is shutting down on it's own.

we do the same for our loving pets why do people not have the right to decide that for themselves.

btw, i am a christian also.
I don't believe in euthanasia because I am a Christian and suicide is wrong. I would try to help my family member as much as possible to stay comfortable, but I would never advocate putting their soul in danger.
I also cannot equate a pet's death with a humans death. I think that euthanasia for humans cheapens human life. How long before we start down that dangerous road...Grandma's got cancer, let's get her to the euthanasia doctor so we don't have to deal with it...or even worse...she has Alzheimer's and I can't deal with her and it is too expensive to keep her in a home, so let's see if we can euthanize her. I guarantee if we legalize euthanasia that is the danger of the road and we must not go down it. Already there is proof...murdering babies in the womb because they are inconvenient to others happens everyday. No one should be killed because of inconvenience, unborn or the elderly and sick.
I 100% agree with you. We would never let our pets live in pain, and we do what will be best for them. If we know there is no chance of them ever getting better, we make the decision to put them down, knowing that they wouldn't want to live in pain, and letting them go with-out suffering.
I honestly don't understand why assisted suicide is murder. I think it's way less humane to let a loved one suffer, especially when you know they are ready to go.
I am for it to end suffering. There is a high rate of suicide in the elderly population, moreso in the teenage population. I learned this when I was studying Psychology.
Occasionally, there are jerks that euthanize pets because they don't like their pet anymore; if human euthanasia is ever made legal, they need to define that is only used for suffering and a decision made by both PATIENT and LOVED ONES. Patient moreso. And, of course, consent forms would need to be signed as they are in veterinary medicine.
Call Dr. Kevorkian too bad he was imprisoned... I am with you on this topic.. The sad fact is that some would take it out of bounds and go way too far with it!
We treat our animals better than we treat humans. I for one would rather go out on my term's. I do not what to be left alive to suffer. No tubes, pain or vegetative state. Life is to be live, but what kind of life is it if you can't take care of yourself.
I agree with you.
