I think the U.S. "get tough on crime thing" is a mistake....here's why?

They keep making senteces longer and longer

They can keep sentences short but make jail suck more

In Japan if you go to prison you get 3 Tea drinks and 1 cup of rice a day. 22 hour a day locked in. No TV no movie night. No phone calls. I think 3 showers a week. They do allow visits once a week.

They make jail suck so bad that people don't want to go there.

Also their is no translators for anything. They are provided but they are NOT obligated to provide one.

But they have a lower crime rate, and even lower reoffender rate.

They save the tax dollars by making the lenth of sentences shorter but having the jails suck so bad.

I say bring back the chain gangs. 90 days of hard labor tends to straighten criminals right out...

The ACLU would be suing non-stop claiming cruel and unusual punishment if we used the Japanese system.
Eighth Amendment may get in the way. ACLU would have a field day suing the government.

I'm all for making the jails and prisons worse but our society is going soft.

90 days of making big rocks into little rocks would be a nice sentence.
I think Sheriff Joe Arpaio has the right model. El Scott is right too, we're too soft.

You're probably a criminal!
I'm going to have to question the accuracy of your information about Japan's penal system. I don't know what goes on over there, but the average adult consuming nothing but tea and 1 cup of rice a day would die from malnutrition in a matter of a few months, at most.
