Am I entitled to any breaks on a 4 hour shift?
I am presently employed at Tim Hortons in Canada. I work 4 hours a day 5 days a week. I have not been given any breaks since working there. I was told by management that I wasn't entitled to a break when working 4 hours.
This confuses me because for the employees that work an 8 hour shift, they are given two 15 minute breaks.
Wouldn't that make sense that I should be given one 15 minute break then?
I have tried finding information regarding this and I have come up empty handed.
Could someone please help?!!

From the Ontario Ministry of Labour website regarding the Employment Standards Act:
"Under the ESA, employers are required to provide eating periods to employees. An employee must not work for more than five hours in a row without getting a 30-minute eating period free from work. However, if the employer and the employee agree, the eating period can be split into two eating periods within every five consecutive hours. The two eating periods must total at least 30 minutes. This agreement can be verbal or in writing."
Having said that, I worked retail as a teenager, and my 4-hr shift included a 15 min break. Now, as a business owner, my part-timers get a 15 min break as well. It's not law, it's just right.
For God's sake, if you can't go 4 hours without taking a break, then something is wrong. Quit being lazy.
I would think you should be entitled to one break but i dont know where you would find info on it
only a female would ask that question... four hours is nothing
if you are unionized, check with you shop Stewart, but in general no breaks are required during a Short 4 hour shift.
Well if it were up to me you could have a break every hour. But you should at least have a break after two hours.
Again, it depends on your union. If you are not union do a search on labor law in your area.
Most places have to give you a 10 minute break after 4 hours of work, so your employer may be getting around that by only working you in 4 hour shifts?
Start job hunting, while you still have this job.
Best of luck.
I don't think you are being lazy at all. In Texas, employees that work a 4 hour shift are entitled to one 10 or 15 minute break, and those who work an 8 hour shift are entitled to two 10 or 15 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch break. You may want to get on the web and check out your province's labor/employment laws. Most employers choose not to grant breaks, though, but if it is bothering you that much, it would be worth it to do a little research.
