What is the legal sound limit in the UK at night in a residential area ? and at what time does it start?

My neighour can literally hear a pin drop!! we are normally in bed by 10 but they will come round the following morning and shout at us saying we had them up all night!! we watch tv at a low volume and never have the music on over volume 10 (low), im starting to think they just like having a go at us!!

Answers:
there is no sound limit as such but you are expected to be reasonable in the noise you make and dont cause annoyance to you neighbours no hard and fast rule.
and 11pm is considered reasonablle to lower the volume if you have been overdoing it a little

There is not a statutory level as such - if a complaint has been made and the authorities become involved then "What would be the reaction of an average reasonable person to the noise?" is the question applied by the environmental health officer in coming to a decision. Quiet music or low TV which is not absolutely constant all night is unlikely ever to be considered in breach. The general time after which people are expected to be more considerate in keeping down noise is 9 p.m (that is when licenced premises are required to close down noisy play areas etc and building firms are required to stop work completely). So theoretically there is an hour there (assuming you are quiet once in bed!) that they may have more of a leg to stand on, but even then, the rule is not silence, but what is reasonable.
Unofrtunately, yes, some people thrive on confrontation and the best thing to do, I have found is just to laugh at them - respond for example along the lines of 'Yes I have made an appointment at the hospital for my wife and I to have our voice boxes removed' - that will help won't it?' Or - 'I am so sorry to hear that we are disturbing you. please accept these ear mufflers with our compliments.' or indeed 'Can you lend me a pin? As I'm sure you heard, I dropped mine last night and can't seem to find it'.
Try phoning your local Council there is a special department that deals with noise "pollution" as such, they will be able to tell you all about it! But I like eriverpipes answer!
