What are the US Prison statistics? What percentage of detainees are there for marijuana-related offences?
Answers:
There were a total of 1,846,351 state and local arrests for drug abuse violations in the United States during 2005. Of the drug arrests, 4.9% were for marijuana sale/manufacturing and 37.7% were for marijuana possession.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported 5,599 marijuana-related arrests during 2005. This is down from 6,252 in 2004 and 6,216 in 2003.
According to a 2004 Bureau of Justice Statistics survey of state and Federal prisoners, approximately 12.7% of state prisoners and 12.4% of Federal prisoners were serving time for a marijuana-related offense. This is a decrease from 1997 when the figures were 12.9% and 18.9%, respectively.
During FY 2006, there were 6,423 Federal defendants sentenced for marijuana-related charges in U.S. Courts. Approximately 96% of the cases involved marijuana trafficking
I don't know, but our prison system needs to be overhauled like everything else in this government. If someone doesn't pay their taxes they will go to prison longer than someone that commits murder, goes to show our government is more concerned with money then life. We recently had a child rapist that got off with 4 months in jail, while a man that cleaned up old tires off his property went to jail because it was wet lands. If the prisons weren't filled with non criminals offenses maybe we could actually clean up this country and make it safe. Then innocent college students wouldn't be dead while a illegal known criminal is still alive. What will it take before this government starts to care about the well being of it's citizens?
The military recently admitted they have to wave many criminal offenses because what use to be considered a prank is now classified as a felony
