What do yo think of the English justice system?
I have just found that a man who had ran over a local 5 year old lad and killed him, only recieved 5 months jail sentence, and he will probably be out in 3, also a 5 year driving ban.
When the little ran got run over he was in the road and the driver said he thought he hit something, then got out of the car and couldn't find anything, then he drove off. Also it was months until they found out who had hit him.
I just think the justice system stinks, as this is not just the only case. I have studied Criminology and maybe there should be guidelines on what the crime is and the minimum sentence on which the person should serve.
What do you think?

It's a joke, it seems to be run by people who have no concept of the 'real' world. I believe the worst example is the right of parole for 'good behaviour' this means that in reality every sentence handed down is instantly reduced by half !
I think it would be great to put more people in prison and for longer.
Trouble is, they need to be built and paid for.
Everytime someone tries to build a prison it gets rejected for planning permission becuase residents and councils don;t want them near them.
They also cost lots of money and people want everything without having to pay for them.
I just think the justice system stinks, i think we should have a deat penalty
Yes theres a law ,,,,one ,for the ,rich,,,,and one for us,,,,,,
Its a joke and getting worse under labour (for example the new drinking and dope laws have backfired on society and they may have to be reversed).
The case above,of the 5 year old killed be someone who didnt find the victim (!!),will have been examined by legal experts who decided the driver was guilty.
Obviously a 5 year old has a right to cross the road like anyone else.Sadly in this case it wasnt to be.Yes 5 months,or less, isnt a very high price for the driver to pay.
I think several major laws need to be reviewed, perhaps scrapped and replaced with better laws that are more in keeping with today's society. However, the vast majority of the public fit into two camps, conservative (not as in the party) and liberal (again not in the sense of the party), with very few moderates. If the two opposing views could find a compromise, and become more moderate, then we might get somewhere, however, compromises are hard to find in this day and age.
We live in strange times, where drinking is almost state sponsored, yet a little LSD is treated the same as Crack Cocaine. Kill someone by car and serve a few months, kill someone with a knife (even if it was accidental) and get several years. Strange sort of justice we lead!

and another one just for mp`s.
Its not the English justice system, its the English legal system.
Justice doesnt come into it.
I sure hate to hear about a child being killed but you have to wonder why would a parent let there child play in the road, also was the man old or drunk or just did not see the child i would need a lot more info to make a fair jugement.
Crime against the person usually gets proportionally lower sentences. So it seems anyway. I lived in the UK for 25 years now. It's the way things are.
Why haven't they locked you up yet?
The US judicial system is not what it used to be. More judges are using their political lives influence how they interpret law.
I feel that placing mandatory sentences on crimes immediately devalues the judicial system and human life: Devalues in that it ties the hands of the judge to an extent. Devalues human life because the judge cannot make exceptions in the cases where the punishment does not fit. I also feel it could be part of the reason some people 'get off' in a jury trial- because the minimum sentence is too stern or the maximum is far too severe.
Let the defendant, prosecutor, judge, and jury do their jobs.
In some instances the law is OK, it is the sentences that are a joke. They are to short - and recently a top judge even said that murderers spend too long in prison and should be released earlier!
We do not have the death sentence in this country, but I believe that "Life Imprisonment" should mean just that "LIFE!"
Some of the sentencing in this country is a joke and needs to be looked at and changed.
If you have studied criminology then you should be well aware of how absurd minimum sentences are.
There is no justice system that is perfect. It has worked for a long time in the UK and is appropriate for this country. I mean in the US with the death penalty being so risky I would not say the system is better when a man is kept on death row for twenty five years and is then found to be innocent of the crime, well that's a travesty of justice. You will always hear of these isolated cases where the penalty does not seem to fit the crime, but I guess we do not know all of the facts. Certainly if the prosecution thought that the sentence was inappropriate for the crime committed they could lodge an appeal. Judges do have guidelines, but that does not mean they have to follow them. I do not know of this case you spoke of so I can't really comment apart from what I have said.
what does criminology mean coz you seem to think the guy why knocked down the 5 year old committed a crime, what should he get longer for please explain what crime he committed.
accidents happen, its a sad fact of life and as you said the little lad was in the road, that's asking for trouble in my book and where was his parents why was a 5 year old left wandering the streets ??.
i think you need to understand the law before you star ranting on about how bad it is, i think UK law is the best in the world, yes its not perfect nothing ever is but its fair and its just.
