How is it possible to find out if someone has left a will but failed to inform loved ones of its existence?

is there a data base that solicitors might use to register a will ? A friend of mine lost his mother but doesnt know which solicitor his mother used or of any knowlege of a will she may have placed somewhere..as it stands all his mothers wealth is going to her husband who,m she was preparing to leave before her untimely death.

Answers:
No, Wills only become public records once they have gone to Probate, so there is no way you could trace a Will without contacting every local solicitor.

Personally I don't know, but I bet the Citizens Advice would.
Sometimes a will is recorded at the recorders office. That is rare. I have a will but I wrote it when my children were infants and I have never discussed it with them. So, yes it is possible.
Most wills are filed with the Surrogates Court of the County the person resides in. Check with them. Or hire an attorney.
