Is legality the only main difference between paying protection money and paying taxes?

No. We have a degree of control on how much we must pay with taxes. For example, the majority of the electoral college voted for George W Bush, and everyone who pays taxes got a tax cut and a tax rebate.
Also, protection money is usually paid to someone as protection from them. Paying taxes does not mean you are protected from the government, they just try and make sure that you are kept safe from harm from such things as terrorists, bad food, etc. Even then, we are subject to an occassional bridge collapse because no system or object created by man is perfect.
Paying taxes will reap some rewards and services. I see the only difference between insurance companies and mafia protection is that the government is able to identify and tax the revenue of insurance companies, so they are given a free pass. I guess if the mafia knew all they had to do was declare their income, it never would have been illegal.
Well, when you pay taxes you do get a few things for your money. You get roads, bridges, public education, water supply, access to college education, funds for medical research, an educated public, a military presense, police, fire department, social services, libraries, and a method of filing grievances with your local, state and federal government.
But other than that, you don't get anything.

Odd thing to ask!. paying taxes is ones obligation t for the inclusive good of society - paying protection is paying debt to a gangster..
