Legitimate & affordable background check?

What type of companies do a background check? What are they checking for? Do they know if you've been fired? How can I do a background check on myself?

Answers:
Shoot... if it's professional level nowdays all do. More and more even construction companies and hotels might. But as another said it is usually just a criminal and credit check. Credit you can check yourself.... if you are young and don't have any its no big. At any age they just want to make sure that you are not in SERIOUS trouble.

The criminal thing you can do yourself. In many places you can just go to the police dept. and have it done for $25.00 or something small. People do this if they are getting certain jobs like armed security or something. But you will already know if you have felonies or non-traffic things so there is no real point.

Past jobs and reason why you left do not show up. Even if you were applying for a low level government clearance they usually don't bother to go that in depth. So don't sweat it. Most any company just does criminal and credit.... that's it.

And the online background checks? Bogus and worthless either way for you purposes.

Why would you want to do a background check on yourself? You know everything about you, right? Are you curious to see what all can be found? Credit checks, previous employers comments, criminal history, and school records are easy to get.

It depends how in depth you want to investigate. I've known government agencies to send investigators to their children's daycares. If you were applying for my place of employment, I would check to see if you owed any of the entities we represent (hospital, taxing entities and/or delinquent fines and fees through the court.), and then call your previous employers to see if you were eligible for re-hire. Then, I would call your references to see if the information you provided could be verified.
Most background checks include 2 components:

1. criminal check (using public records available at the courthouse)
2. credit check (through the 3 reporting bureaus)

You can check these yourself. For #2, you need permission of the subject.
